John Mellencamp proves the songs — and the stories — still matter in Charlotte
There was no opening act, no lengthy introduction and no unnecessary buildup.
At sunset Thursday, John Mellencamp swaggered onto the stage at Charlotte’s Truliant Amphitheater with a cigarette in hand and a guitar slung over his shoulder, then got straight to work, launching a career-spanning performance that reminded fans why his songs have remained staples of American rock for more than four decades.

The stop on his 2026 “Dancing Words Tour — The Greatest Hits” lasted nearly 2½ hours and featured 24 songs backed by an accomplished eight-piece band that rarely let the energy dip. On a warm summer evening with the sun setting behind the lawn, the amphitheater provided a fitting backdrop for Mellencamp’s heartland rock.
Seeing him live for the first time, I expected to recognize a handful of hits. I didn’t expect to know as many songs as I did.
Even younger listeners who may not immediately recognize Mellencamp’s name have almost certainly heard his music. His songs have become part of the American soundtrack, turning up in movies, television, commercials and countless high school graduation videos. That familiarity was evident throughout the night as fans sang along to classics including “Small Town,” “Jack & Diane,” “Pink Houses,” “Cherry Bomb” and the show-closing “Hurts So Good.”
Much of Mellencamp’s songwriting draws from his upbringing in Seymour, Indiana, telling stories about ordinary people, small towns and everyday struggles. Even for listeners who didn’t grow up in rural America, those themes continue to resonate because they feel authentic rather than nostalgic.
His voice has weathered over the years, but that only added character to songs built on grit and honesty. Rather than trying to recreate the polished recordings of the 1980s, Mellencamp embraced where he is today, allowing his excellent band to carry much of the instrumental and vocal load while he focused on storytelling and connecting with the audience.

The set balanced crowd favorites with deeper cuts, moving comfortably between reflective moments and full-throttle rockers. Songs like “Authority Song” and “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.” energized the audience, while the a cappella and acoustic moments gave the performance room to breathe before building back toward the night’s biggest singalongs.
The audience was impressive for a Thursday night. While the lawn remained mostly empty, the reserved seating area was largely full. The crowd skewed older, with plenty of fans who appeared decades removed from high school but sang along with the enthusiasm of teenagers. The atmosphere felt surprisingly relaxed — more easygoing than many arena rock concerts — without sacrificing energy.
Mellencamp was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, and Thursday’s performance served as a reminder why. His catalog has aged remarkably well, continuing to find new listeners while remaining deeply meaningful to longtime fans.
For a casual fan attending a first John Mellencamp concert, the biggest surprise wasn’t how many hits he played. It was realizing just how many of those songs have quietly become woven into the fabric of American culture.
