Suspect fatally shot by CMPD officer was a 47-year-old man. His name is released
The suspect fatally shot by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer has been identified as 47-year-old as Curtis Jermaine Massey, officials say.

Massey was killed around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, after police responded to a 911 call about a “disturbance” in the 1300 block of Lasalle Street, CMPD said. A firearm was recovered at the scene, officials said.
“According to CMPD, an officer fired his duty weapon after a man allegedly pulled a gun. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation reports.
The SBI is leading an investigation of the shooting, and CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is conducting a separate investigation.
CMPD has filed a petition for the release of the body-worn camera footage recorded during the shooting, and will share the footage “according to any guidelines set by the court.”

“I am deeply committed to being transparent and forthcoming, while balancing our legal duty to protect the integrity of an active investigation,” CMPD Chief Estella D. Patterson said in a news release.
“Having personally reviewed the body-worn camera footage from the recent officer-involved shooting, I believe it provides critical context that will help the public understand what happened. Under North Carolina law, releasing body-worn camera footage requires a court order.”
The SBI’s investigation will include a review of the Medical Examiner’s report, which could “address some of the lingering questions and unverified reports currently circulating,” CMPD said.
