“Seek shelter in a sturdy structure,” NWS forecasters said on social media site X for an area including the airport and Mount Holly in eastern Gaston County.
The alert was in effect until 3:15 p.m.
A similar statement was issued for Rock Hill, Fort Mill and Tega Cay until 3:30 p.m.
At least 291 flights were delayed at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport at 3:30 p.m., according to tracking site Flight Aware.

“Dreary start to the weekend ahead of an approaching front,” according to an NWS post on X with a radar image of rain clouds moving across most of the Southeast, from Tennessee and the Carolinas to Florida.
“Mostly cloudy skies can be expected through the weekend for most areas, especially east of the mountains,” NWS forecasters said.
