The grisly discovery was made just before 9 a.m. Saturday in west Jacksonville, about a 120-mile drive southeast from downtown Raleigh.

“The Jacksonville Police Department responded to the wooded area at the corner of Yopp Road and U.S. 17 in reference to a skeleton being found by a citizen mowing the grass,” police said in an Oct. 3 news release.

“Officers arrived on scene and located a human skeleton. With the assistance of the N.C. State Bureau of Investigations, the scene was processed.”

Evidence found at the scene has given detectives “a potential identification” of the person, but the theory awaits confirmation by the State Medical Examiner’s Office, officials said.

A cause of death has not been released.

Maps show the intersection of Yopp Road and U.S. 17 is lined with acres of open grass.
