19-year-old dies after jumping from bridge into High Rock Lake, NC sheriff says
A 19-year-old man died after leaping from a state highway bridge into High Rock Lake, according to the investigators in North Carolina.

It happened Sunday along N.C. 8 near the Pebble Beach swimming area, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Witnesses report Eliezer Sanchez of Winston-Salem jumped off the Brown Loflin Bridge and “became distressed while swimming to shore,” the sheriff’s office said.
His death is being investigated as a drowning, and “criminal intent” is not suspected, the sheriff’s office said.
Signs are posted along the bridge, warning pedestrians against jumping, diving and fishing, but visitors have continued to do it, officials said.

“Jumping from the bridge is extremely dangerous and has resulted in serious injury or death of individuals,” the sheriff’s office says.
“These restrictions are not intended to prevent anyone from enjoying the area, they are in place to protect lives. Please obey all posted signs, make responsible decisions, and help us keep everyone safe.”
Pebble Beach is a designated swimming area on High Rock Lake that has been roped off to keep swimmers away from boat traffic, according to Highrocklakelife.com. It does not have lifeguards on duty.

The beach is about a 65-mile drive northeast from uptown Charlotte.
