CMPD officer hospitalized after driver on I-85 in Charlotte hits him, police say

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was hospitalized after a driver suspected of being impaired hit him on Interstate 85 northbound in Charlotte early Saturday, according to a CMPD news release.

The officer had serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.

CMPD did not release the name of the officer, who was hit after responding to a wreck call on the highway between W.T. Harris Boulevard and University City Boulevard just after 12:30 a.m.

Officers were helping with traffic control at a crash when the driver hit the officer, who was in a CMPD car, around 1:45 a.m. The driver was also hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

State Highway Patrol troopers and officers with the CMPD DWI Taskforce evaluated the driver and determined he was impaired when he hit the rear of the CMPD car.

After he was released from the hospital, 22-year-old Nicholas James Stedeford-Aaron was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving to endanger and failure to move over for emergency vehicles with injury.
