The single-car wreck happened Sunday in Greensboro when Jamiah Smith of Locust “failed to negotiate the curve” of an Interstate 40 ramp, the Greensboro Police Department says.

Smith, 26, was driving with an open container of alcohol at the time, police say.

“Smith had her three children in the vehicle with her: a 9-year-old and 1-year-old twins. When the vehicle left the road, it overturned and came to a stop on the ramp from US 220 North to I-40 West,” police said in an Aug. 11 news release.

“Smith and her children were taken by ambulance to a local hospital. One of the twins was critically injured because the child was not properly secured in a child restraint seat.”

The girl died late Monday at a hospital, police say.

The other two children were treated and released Sunday by the hospital, officials said. One suffered head trauma, and the other had shoulder and abdomen injuries, court documents report.
