Both deputies are being treated at a Greenville hospital for non-life threatening gunshot wounds, according to Lenoir County Sheriff Jackie Rogers. Their identities have not been released.

The gunman vanished into a home while exchanging shots with deputies, and he was later found in one of the bedrooms, officials said. Details of his condition have not been released.

“This morning between 11 and 11:20 a.m., we responded to the 700 block of Jonestown Road in reference to an individual that was shooting at passersby,” Rogers said at a news conference shared on social media.

“Deputies arrived on scene and immediately had an individual … exit a residence and shoot at the deputies. One of the deputies was shot at a that time in the stomach. We returned fire. The subject retreated back into the residence.”

Additional deputies arrived, ordered the suspect come out of the home, and he began firing again, “striking another deputy,” Rogers said.

Two armored vehicles were brought to the scene, and they breached the door of the residence, he said.

A drone was then sent inside the home to search for the suspect, and he was found in a bedroom, Rogers said. It’s believed was only one person shooting at deputies from the home, he said.

“The situation is under control. There is no threat to the public at this time,” Rogers said.

The suspect was not known to law enforcement prior to the incident, and the neighborhood is not known for criminal activity, he said.
