Police killed a man they say fired a gun and attempted a carjacking in downtown Kannapolis Friday.

Around 11:40 a.m., officers went to South Main Street near Bell Street after a 911 caller reported a man firing a gun, according to a Kannapolis Fire and Police news release. Police didn’t identify the man as of Saturday.
Officers saw the man “holding a gun” and trying to carjack someone, according to the release. Police released no further details, saying only that officers shot him.

The man died at a hospital, police said. No officers were hurt, officials said.
The officers were placed on administrative leave, “which is standard protocol pending an internal review of the incident,” according to the news release.
The SBI is helping with the investigation, “per standard procedures,” the police department said.
