1,200 in Charlotte area among 11,000 without power in NC amid floods, landslides

Remnants of Hurricane Isaias dumped more than 5 inches of rain in parts of North Carolina, causing flash flooding, landslides and leaving 11,000 Duke Energy customers without power early Sunday.

More than 1,200 of those outages were in the Charlotte area, where the U.S. Geological Survey recorded nearly 2.4 inches of rain. The highest rain totals were in the Mint Hill area, officials say.

Parts of western North Carolina got nearly 6 inches of rain, including Marion and Hendersonville, the USGS said early Sunday.

Seven flash flood warnings were issued overnight for communities west of Charlotte, including in Morganton, Valdese and Icard in Burke County.

Some roads in McDowell County were under a foot of water, the county’s Emergency Management Department said early Sunday.

Rutherford County Emergency Management warned Lake Lure was engorged and some of its dam gates were being opened to increase water flow into the Broad River.

“Residents and businesses along the Broad River below the dam should anticipate rising water levels and potential flooding in low-lying areas,” Rutherford County officials warned.

“Residents are strongly encouraged to move away from the river, avoid flood-prone areas, and monitor water levels closely.”
