In an odd first, NC sheriff’s office handed 1950 Oldsmobile for debt settlement

It’s not uncommon for sheriffs to be stuck with strange things as part of the job, but the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has found itself in possession of a 76-year-old “muscle car.”

The 1950 Oldsmobile Delta 88 was surrendered as part of a civil judgment, and stands as a first for the department.

“It is not typical this age vehicle is seized,” according to Lt. Dane Hoyle, public information officer for sheriff’s office.

“I did inquire with our civil division about odd items seized for civil judgments. I was told they have seized a lawn mower in the past. I’m sure more off stuff has been seized.”

The car was new when Harry Truman was president, baseball hero Jackie Robinson signed the highest contract in Brooklyn Dodgers history, and child star Shirley Temple announced she was retiring, according to Historic Newspapers.

The car is being auctioned Sept. 10 in Newton, as part of a civil judgment. The same auction will include a 1994 Dodge Ram and a 2003 Toyota Celica, officials say.

And, no, the Oldsmobile doesn’t work, but that may make it more enticing to classic car enthusiasts.

Oldsmobile Deltas hit the market in 1949 and were a major success, according to Over-Drive Magazine.

“The 88 became the ‘muscle car’ of the early 50s,” the magazine says. “It also became popular among stock car racers this year and starting in 1951, going head-to-head with the Hudson Hornet.”
