High school football update: Weather updates, Friday’s live scores
It’s Week 5 of the N.C. high school football season and we’ve got previews for key games and a complete schedule for teams in the Charlotte-area, Raleigh-area and statewide.

Note: A handful of games were moved up to Thursday. There are thunderstorms in the forecast for Friday night in the Charlotte-area. Check back here for schedule changes.
Chambers (4-0) at Ardrey Kell (3-1), Friday, 7 p.m.: Chambers averages 44 points and 330.5 yards rushing per game, and the Cougars still haven’t played a complete game. There’s lots of room to improve. Ardrey Kell bounced back from a 42-21 loss to Marvin Ridge by blowing out rival South Meck, 37-14, last week. And the Knights have a future star in freshman QB Noah Dailey (735 yards, 14 TDs).
Hopewell (3-1) at North Mecklenburg (2-2), Friday, 7 p.m.: This is one of the best rivalries in Mecklenburg County that doesn’t get mentioned enough. North Meck leads the overall series 15-9 in “the Battle for the Shield” and this is the 25th renewal. Hopewell comes in on a two-game win streak behind a rushing attack that averages 6.6 yards per carry. North Meck snapped a two-game losing streak with a 28-7 win over East Meck last week.
Rocky River (0-4) at Garinger (1-3), Friday, 7 p.m.: Rocky River and senior DB Jarron Lorick (8.7 tackles per game) look to stop Garinger and get the Ravens’ first win of the season. Garinger tries again for its first two-win season since 2018.

West Charlotte (3-1) at Carrollton, GA (4-0), Friday, 7:30 p.m.: West Charlotte has one of the youngest teams in the area, led by freshman QB Devareus Hill Jr. Friday, the Lions face the fourth-ranked team in America. Carrollton averages 60 points and 584 yards of offense per game. Sophomore QB CJ Cypher ranks 20th nationally with 1,400 passing yards.
Providence Day (3-1) at Rabun Gap (1-3), Friday, 7 p.m.: The two top private schools in the NCISAA hook up in Georgia. Rabun Gap has long been apart of the private league and has played a tough schedule and snapped a three-game losing streak last week. Providence Day may be without starting QB Cole Cater for another week.
Mallard Creek (2-2) at McCallie, TN (3-1), Friday, 7:30 p.m.: Mallard Creek goes to Chattanooga to face the No. 4-ranked team in Tennessee. The Blue Tornadoes feature QB Louis Fortier, a 6-5, 230-pound junior, whose 1,375 yards passing ranks 24th in America. Mallard Creek will try to bounce back from a 28-25 upset loss at Myers Park last week.
Lake Norman (4-0) at Reagan (4-0), Friday, 7 p.m.: This is the NC game of the week. Lake Norman is No. 4 in the NC Super 25 rankings of the state’s best teams. Reagan is No. 9. Lake Norman will have to deal with a Reagan ground game averaging nearly 200 yards per game and led by junior John Evans Jr. (374 yards, 5 TDs)
Green Run, VA (3-0) at Hough (4-0), Saturday, 3 p.m.: Green run is ranked No. 35 in Virginia by MaxPreps and will try to upset a Hough team ranked as high as No. 12 nationally. Riding an 18-game win streak, the Huskies will feature a defense that looks like the best in the Carolinas.
