Familiar eatery to replace closed Plaza Midwood breakfast spot. Here’s when

A Charlotte restaurant serving authentic Mexican and Central American fare will make Plaza Midwood its new home.

Taqueria Number 1 plans to close its spot on East Independence Boulevard and relocate to 2801 Central Ave. next month, owner Rubén Granados Martinez confirmed to CharlotteFive.

Renovations are underway, and Martinez said he hopes to open by early September.

“It is actually a big step we are taking, thinking of our customers and making our products more accessible to them,” he said.

The space was last home to Deli St., a woman-owned bistro serving classic breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Think: smoked salmon bagels and chicken salad sandwiches. It’s not clear when it officially closed.

Repeated phone calls to Deli St. went unanswered Wednesday, Aug. 5. CharlotteFive reached out to management via email and was awaiting a response.

In an email, Martinez said several factors prompted the move. Beyond outgrowing Taqueria Number 1’s current space, he pointed to renovations at a neighboring business that made parking complicated for customers.

“We also looked for an area that could be still close by to both customers from uptown and the regular customers we already have,” he told CharlotteFive. “So, just thinking on making it easier for parking and a better experience for our customers, we decided to move.”

It’s been two years since a small fire forced to the taco shop to close temporarily, CharlotteFive previously reported. It reopened in December, touting a “newly renovated space” and a reimagined menu.

The quesabirrias remain a crowd favorite, as are the flautas and traditional Mexican tortas, according to the restaurant’s website.

Plaza Midwood has seen some big changes in its dining scene in recent months — with more possibly on the way.

La Vecina, a walk-up taco bar, debuted last week with traditional tacos, birria empanadas and snacks served alongside mezcal-based cocktails, CharlotteFive reported.

Just up the street, a new American fusion concept called Touché Charlotte is taking shape. It will go in the former The Club House Kitchen & Cocktails space, though an official opening date wasn’t made public.
