It happened around 1:20 a.m. on Aug. 1 near Jacksonville, and the culprit remains unidentified, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office said in an Aug. 7 news release.

The victim has been identified as Christen Phillips of Kinston, and she remains hospitalized, officials said.

“Phillips was stopped at the intersection of Western Boulevard and Gum Branch Road while making a food delivery. Before turning left onto Gum Branch Road, the vehicle in front of her did not proceed when the traffic light turned green. Phillips briefly alerted the driver by sounding her horn, at which time the vehicle moved out of her way and began following her,” the sheriff’s office says.

“After Phillips arrived at the delivery location in the Shamrock Drive area, she attempted to return to her vehicle. The suspect approached Phillips and struck her in the head with a baseball bat before fleeing the area.”

Phillips reports she was hit in the face and head, and “woke up an unverified amount of time later.”

“I didn’t know what to do, so I drove to the hospital. … They said with the amount of blood at the scene and in my car, it was unbelievable that I was able to drive myself,” Phillips wrote in an Aug. 2 Facebook post.

“I had to be transported to a trauma center in Wilmington. I had multiple skull fractures and brain bleeds and blood and cerebral fluid draining from my left ear for hours. My cheek bone on my left side is also fractured.”

The man was driving a dark-colored Range Rover, which Phillips says blocked her car from leaving the site of her final delivery for the night.

The sheriff’s office reports it questioned a man “believed to be involved in the assault,” but he has since been ruled out.
