Charlotte man shot by officers had previous assault, kidnapping, firearm charges
The suspect shot by police in University City on Tuesday was a 39-year-old man with previous assault, firearm and kidnapping charges, according to court records.

Darnell K. Simms was identified by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Wednesday in a press release as the man shot by officers in the 4200 block of Autumn Frost Trail.
Simms, who is in stable condition, was shot after firing at police first, CMPD said. Police confronted him after receiving a call from a woman who accused Simms of threatening to come to her home with a gun.
The woman went to a nearby business while police met Simms outside the home. No police or neighbors were injured, but some nearby property was damaged by the gunfire, CMPD said.
Simms is now facing multiple charges, including four counts of attempted murder charges and violating a domestic violence order protection, CMPD said.
Court records showed Simms was charged with assault for an incident at that same address in July.

A woman at that home accused Simms of grabbing her shirt during an argument and pouring milk on her head and down her back, a CMPD arrest affidavit said.
Simms was also accused of smashing windows of a vehicle parked in the driveway. Police said in the affidavit that officers observed the woman’s shirt was torn, and that she was wet with what appeared to be milk. Simms told police he poured milk on the woman during an argument, the affidavit said.
He was charged with assault on a female and misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. Those charges are still pending in court.
Simms has multiple criminal charges going back to 2008, according to court records. In past months, he has been charged with second-degree kidnapping, fleeing elude police, firearm charges and assault charges.
In addition to attempted murder, Simms will be charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, five counts of damage to property, three counts of shooting into an occupied property and one county of a possession of a firearm by a felon when released from the hospital.
