This means Bank of America employees will still have flexibility with three days in the office and two days working from home, but remote days cannot fall on consecutive days, such as Thursday and Friday or Monday and Tuesday.
Bank of America did not disclose the number of employees affected by the latest remote work restriction.
The company-wide changes will take effect in mid-September after Labor Day weekend, according to a bank spokesperson. The update is not limited to Bank of America’s uptown Charlotte headquarters and applies across its offices nationwide.
Bank of America introduced the change to balance office usage throughout the work week. This avoids overcrowding when employees come in Tuesday through Thursday and prevents offices from sitting empty on Mondays and Fridays, the spokesperson said.
Another goal for Bank of America is to boost in-person collaboration, which leadership views as critical for teamwork, mentoring, networking and long-term career growth. The updates were driven by employee feedback, the nature of banking operations and customer needs.
Bank of America employees in client-facing positions, such as branch bankers and traders, are already required to work in person five days a week, and have been doing so for several years.
Bank of America previously updated its remote work policy following the pandemic, The Charlotte Observer reported in October 2022. That earlier plan allowed certain in-office employees to work from home up to two days a week, framed around feedback from a company-wide survey conducted in April 2022.
In a 2022 memo to staff, Bank of America noted that its updated policy divided workers into four categories. Branch staff and similar roles remained fully in-person along with jobs involving frequent travel or client meetings, while senior leadership was expected to continue working consistently from the office.

Bank of America is not the only local financial institution tightening its office attendance requirements.
Last November, Charlotte-based Truist announced that all employees were required to return to the office five days a week starting in January.
Wells Fargo continues to allow most employees to work from home two days a week. Most senior leaders and employees who work directly with customers are expected to work in the office four or five days a week. The San Francisco bank has its biggest employment base in Charlotte.
As one of the world’s largest financial institutions, Bank of America provides banking, wealth management, investment and trading services.
It operates 3,500 branches and 15,000 ATMs, across 100 U.S. markets. The company also plans to open 150 branches by 2027.
Bank of America employs more than 211,000 people globally, including approximately 19,000 workers in Charlotte. The financial giant ranked highest among all North Carolina companies on the 2026 Fortune 500 list, coming in at 20th nationally with reported revenue of $191.6 billion.
