A fun Q&A: Panthers’ Jalen Coker spends evening with Charlotte Observer readers
The Charlotte Observer hosted an event to kick off the Carolina Panthers’ 2026 season, and thanks to Jalen Coker, it left readers across the Carolinas happy.

The fan-favorite Panthers receiver joined Observer subscribers on Tuesday evening at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery in Ballantyne, Charlotte. In a Q&A with Observer reporter Alex Zietlow, the 24-year-old star discussed a variety of topics.
That included what it was like growing up in Sterling, Virginia; when he knew he was meant to be a receiver (and not a defensive back, or, say, a quarterback); why he stayed at Holy Cross despite having many transfer opportunities; and why the Panthers were such a wonderful landing spot for him coming out of college.
He also took questions from the readers on-hand, he graciously took photos with fans, and he signed all sorts of memorabilia — from Coca-Cola cans, to photos of kittens (yes this happened), to Panthers jerseys and more.
The 6-foot-3, 213-pound receiver also explained where the event’s $10 price of admission is going. The money will flow to a charity called the Love Like Adam Foundation that honors a childhood friend Coker lost to hazing in 2021. Q: What’s something that we don’t know as fans that players would want us to know?
A: “Ooh, that’s a good question. Something…. I’m the best basketball player on the team.”
Q: Has anybody ever pointed out to you, as a UDFA, Holy Cross, multi-sport athlete, that you are the perfect Bill Belichick player? How does that make you feel to kind of fit that mold of players with your skill set?
A: Well, I really thought like coming out in the draft, you know, especially being at Holy Cross in Massachusetts, I always thought that, you know, New England was going to be a home that I found eventually, but yeah, no, I didn’t. But yeah, I think he’s a good coach and I think that good coaches look for those guys that are able to be multi-sport athletes and are able to do a lot of things well.”
Q: The Panthers have invested in the defense recently. Since you go against them in training camp, what are your thoughts on that unit?
A: “I mean, I think we have a super physical unit. I mean, I’m pretty sure like the social media team has done a good job of showing how physical the defense is. But you know, you got safeties that will come down and hit. You got corners that will come down and hit. The linebackers speak for themselves. I mean, I think just the physicality that we play with just separates us as a team. And not a lot of guys have DBs that will come down and go hit a running back five yards down the field. And so I think that that’s what stands out with them.”
