Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans will open its first Charlotte store on Oct. 14 at 15500 Community School House Road in Ballantyne. The family-owned grocery chain already has plans for a second store in the Charlotte region. The south Charlotte Wegmans will be 110,000 square feet, about twice the size of traditional supermarkets.
But even before Wegmans opens, another grocery chain is expected to welcome shoppers at a new location in the $10.8 billion Charlotte market, in addition to a new specialty grocery store by Thanksgiving.
Salisbury-based Food Lion will open at Oct. 7 at the former Harris Teeter at the Mintworth shopping center at 5706 Wyalong Drive in southeast Charlotte. A celebration to mark the opening is at 7:45 a.m.
The store will feature fresh produce, meats and everyday essentials, along with ready-to-eat, ready-to-cook and ready-to-heat meals. The store will offer cashier-assisted and self-checkout lanes, plus pickup and delivery.
Matthews-based Harris Teeter closed the store in April following what the company called a “strategic market review.”
