Her socials disappeared. A cease-and-desist — and ransom notes — followed.
When life hands you lemons, you can suck on something sour — or you can make lemonade. And if you’re a Charlotte coffee bar and lounge owner, you lean into what you can make of it, naturally.

Plot Twist founder and co-owner Nikki Velazquez spilled all the tea on what rocked her business just months after opening — and how she’s leaning into it — to CharlotteFive ahead of a gathering last night to mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
Here’s how it all unfolded.
Things were going well — almost too well — for Plot Twist, a coffee and cocktail bar that held its grand opening May 8 in a completely renovated garage shop at 1518 Lyon Court, tucked behind Trope Bookshop and Wiloe Home & Gift in Plaza Midwood.
Customers were streaming in the door, driven largely by Velazquez’s Instagram posts and collab events, along with its menu built around flavor profiles that you can choose as a hot or cold cafe drink, a cocktail or a mocktail.
“I’m over here as a 34-year-old going, ‘Wow, am I crushing it? Like, this is crazy,’” Velazquez said.
That all changed on Aug. 12, when Velazquez woke up to find Plot Twist’s Instagram account deactivated with no clear reason.
“All of what Meta could tell me was that somebody had said that I had stolen their content, but all of our content was organic,” she said.
Then on Aug. 24, the mail carrier delivered an ominous letter.
“We got a cease-and-desist from a book bar out in Texas that had trademarked the name, and that is when everything like clicked and fell into place. And from then, it was full-steam ahead,” Velazquez said.
Long story short, Velazquez’s trademark search hadn’t turned up that business. The Texas book bar’s trademark filing and the Charlotte coffee bar and lounge’s opening had crossed paths within just a few days of each other.
“My lawyer was like, ‘You can do one of three things: You can either fight it, try to buy it or rebrand it.’”
Her response? “Oh, this is, like, forget a twist — I just lost the plot entirely.”

One of the biggest problems in this saga was that the loss of Plot Twist’s Instagram handle — which had reached about 13,000 followers and is now at just over 2,000 followers with a fresh start — led to a steep 37% loss in sales at the business.
Many Charlotteans presumed the coffee bar and lounge that now employs 22 people had simply closed.
“We had enough of a community that we had built off of a culture and vibe that wasn’t based off of product … they really talk about like how they feel when they come — and so they just needed to find us. So our biggest hurdle was having them find us again,” Velazquez said.
A few weeks later, posters reading “MISSING: THE PLOT” popped up around Charlotte with QR codes leading to the coffee and cocktail bar’s website.
There, a ransom note invited people to the coffee bar and lounge, telling them to wear black, ahead of a “funeral” of sorts for the business’s current name on Saturday night.
“I’m a big invisible string girl, Velazquez said. “I never know why something happens, but I do think there’s a connection,” she added.
“People refer to us as Plot. They say, “I’m going to Plot. Come grab a drink at Plot. And we don’t have to remove Plot — Plot is still part of our name. So we are just the Lost Plot instead of Plot Twist,” she said.
Artist Carla Garrison-Mattos’ mural outside will be adjusted on Monday, Sept. 28 to reflect the new name, so customers walking in the door will see the change on Tuesday.
“I think the silver lining in all of it is this might be what the company and the brand was supposed to be the entire time,” Velazquez said.
“It’s so much better to rebuild and lose yourself entirely with the community and people around you, and to not do it alone,” Velazquez said. “And that’s really like the storyline. It’s not that we got a cease-and-desist — that’s just the thing that made us realize what our true story was. I think that’s really cool.”
