Week 6 of the North Carolina high school football season means the start of conference play for most teams, and schools will begin jockeying for league championships and playoff positioning.

Here’s a look at the key games in the region, statewide schedules, the Talking Preps preview show and our weekly picks.
Hopewell (4-1, 0-0 Greater Charlotte 7A/8A) at South Mecklenburg (1-4, 0-0), Fri, 7 p.m.: Hopewell hasn’t won more than four games in a season since 2013, and hasn’t had a winning season since 2010, which is the last time the school had this strong of a start. South Meck will try to pull the upset and snap Hopewell’s three-game win streak. To do it, South Meck will have to score. The Sabres have only topped 14 points in one game all season.
Charlotte Country Day (2-2) at Myers Park (2-2), Fri, 7 p.m.: Myers Park lost to two of the state’s best teams, Providence Day and Weddington, to start the season, but won the past two games by beating Providence and Mallard Creek. The Mustangs have done that by bumping the team scoring average from 13.5 to nearly 35 points per game. Country Day is on track for its second-straight winning season for the first time since 2019. These two schools are 3.3 miles apart and many of the students grew up together. There will be a big crowd for this one.
Chambers (5-0, 0-0 Meck Power Six 7A/8A) at Butler (3-2, 0-0), Fri, 7 p.m.: Chambers is averaging 45.2 points per game and is looking like a bona fide state championship contender. Butler ended a two-game losing streak last week, beating Providence, 35-28. It was the first game this season that senior running back Da’Mourion Thomas-Wright was fully healthy. He ran for 222 yards and two touchdowns last week. If he has another game like that, this conference opener could be tight.

Mallard Creek (3-2, 0-0) at West Charlotte (3-2, 0-0), Fri, 7 p.m.: A young West Charlotte team is averaging just 16.8 points per game but has managed a winning record against a very daunting schedule. Mallard Creek snapped a two-game losing streak with a 38-0 win over McCallie last week. McCallie is the No. 9 ranked team in Tennessee.
East Mecklenburg (3-2, 0-0 Southwestern 7A/8A) at Ballantyne Ridge (2-3, 0-0), Fri, 7 p.m.: After last Friday’s 15-14 come-from-behind win over South Meck, the Eagles have won three games in four weeks and matched their win total from the 2025 season. East Meck has not won more than three games in a season since 2017. Before this season, Ballantyne Ridge had won two games in its two-year history. Year 3 has brought a two-game win streak, and two of the Wolves three losses are by a combined eight points. Coach Tyson Fernandez is making real progress in south Charlotte.
Cannon School (4-0) at Providence Day (4-1), Fri, 7 p.m.: Cannon is rolling, averaging 41.2 points per game and is off to one of the best starts in school history. Providence Day has won two straight since losing, 30-3, to top 15 nationally ranked Hough on Sept. 4. But the Chargers haven’t had starting QB Cole Cater since that game. Cannon wants to show that it’s reached elite level status in the private school ranks. Providence Day’s defense — which has allowed one team more than 14 points — will test that theory.
