Shooting of 16-year-old is small town’s first murder in a decade, NC police say
A North Carolina town of about 880 people is dealing with its first homicide in more than a decade, and the victim is just 16, according to the Magnolia Police Department.

The suspect, Gerardo Emanuel Olvera, is also accused of trying to kill the teen’s father and another man, police say.
It happened around 6:30 p.m. Sunday on East Sandy Street, and police say the suspect left to get a gun, then returned and started shooting people.
“Two of the three victims were 50 year-old (men) suffering gunshot wounds to the head and back areas. The third victim was deceased at the scene. He was a 16-year-old,” police said in a news release.
“Investigators learned that a disagreement had occurred, primarily between the decedent and the suspect. The suspect left the scene and came back a few minutes later with a gun; shooting the victims. The suspect fled the area in a 2009 Ford Flex.”

Investigators have not said why the teen and suspect were arguing.
Olvera, 53, was located and arrested Monday in Raeford, about an 85-mile drive west from Magnolia, the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office announced in a social media post.
Charges include murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, police said.
The two wounded men remain hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
Magnolia is near Jacksonville, about an 80-mile drive southeast from downtown Raleigh.
