“Seek shelter in a sturdy structure,” NWS forecasters said on social media site X for an area including the airport and Mount Holly in eastern Gaston County.

The alert was in effect until 3:15 p.m.

A similar statement was issued for Rock Hill, Fort Mill and Tega Cay until 3:30 p.m.

At least 333 flights were delayed at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport at 4:30 p.m., according to tracking site Flight Aware.

“Dreary start to the weekend ahead of an approaching front,” according to an NWS post on X with a radar image of rain clouds moving across most of the Southeast, from Tennessee and the Carolinas to Florida.

While the severe weather threat remained “very low” Saturday, chances increase slightly on Sunday, forecasters said.

“Isolated severe storms are possible Sunday afternoon and evening with damaging winds being the main potential hazard with any severe storms that develop,” the NWS said on X.
