Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for parts of Charlotte area, NWS says

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for parts of Mecklenburg County, as well as Catawba, Lincoln and Iredell counties, the National Weather Service says.

The storms could bring 60 mph gusts and penny size hail to the area, forecasters say.

The warning is in effect until 4 p.m.

“At 3:03 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 7 miles east of Newton to 7 miles east of Lincolnton, moving east at 30 mph,” officials said. “Expect damage to trees and power lines.”

Impacted locations include: Uptown Charlotte, Huntersville, Kannapolis, Downtown Concord, Central Charlotte, South Charlotte, Northeast Charlotte, Southwest Charlotte, East Charlotte, and Northwest Charlotte., officials said.

“If on or near Lake Norman, get away from the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 15 miles from the parent thunderstorm,” the NWS says.

“If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.”
