The meat may have been stored in a refrigerator experiencing unsafe deviations in temperature. The products were distributed nationwide, and to Hong Kong.

The processing defect was labeled a Class I Threat by the Food Safety and Inspection Service. Class I recalls involve “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death,” according to the service.

While the USDA recall notice did not disclose the retailers the meat was sent to, Kayem Foods products are sold at many grocery stores, including Publix and Harris Teeter. The company has a product locator on its website.

Temperature control is an important aspect of food safety in restaurants and grocery stores, because harmful bacteria can grow quickly. Consumers are encouraged to toss any items on the recall list, or return them.

The company first learned of the temperature control issue at one of their warehouses when a retail customer complained about receiving warm items on Oct. 1. There have been no reports of illness.

The products were sold under the names Kayem, Genoa, Al Fresco, Triple M, McKenzie Country Classics, McKenzie, Deutschmacher, Jordan’s, Yes’m It’s Essem and Winnisimmet Butchery. Products include hot dogs, sausages, bologna, brisket, bacon, loaf, corn beef and ham.
