Up to 3 inches of rain could fall in parts of Mecklenburg County, forecasters say

Mecklenburg County will serve as a boundary for the slow moving cold front crossing North Carolina, resulting in rain totals ranging from 1.5 inches to 3 inches by end of day Friday, the National Weather Service says.

The county has a 100% chance of rain Thursday, and the heaviest rain will be at the northern end, including Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson, maps show.

Meanwhile, the southern end of the county could get between 1.5 and 2 inches, forecasters say.

Isolated parts of the region could get as much as five inches of rain, prompting a flood watch to remain in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday, official say.

In the past 24 hours, multiple sites around Greensboro have reported getting more than five inches of rain, as well as sites in Davidson and Davie counties, the U.S. Geological Survey says.

The front stalled along the Interstate 40 corridor overnight, dumping 4 to 6+ inches in some spots, the NWS said.

How much rain does depend on where the axis of moisture transport sets up, which is highly dependent on where the boundary is. If the boundary slows and doesn’t push as far south, the moisture piling could occur further west,” the National Weather Service says.

“So, all of this is to say that rainfall is expected, but there still exists uncertainty of where the higher rainfall amounts could set up now through Friday.”

Rain chances fall to 90% Thursday night, 70% on Friday and 60% on Saturday, the NWS says.
