Our favorite meals of July at Charlotte restaurants — and where to find them

Just like we do every month, the CharlotteFive team spent the month of July eating.

Here’s a look at the best things we ate in July:

Melissa here. The first thing my server asked me on my latest visit to Haberdish was whether I had any dietary restrictions. When I told him I’m vegetarian, he disappeared then returned to my patio table with a special menu organized by dietary need. No more asking if there’s any hidden chicken broth anywhere!

I ordered the deviled eggs, charred zucchini and collard greens. The eggs did have Worchestershire sauce, but that was clearly noted, and I made an exception this once. For dessert, I had the seasonal bread pudding, a generous portion that could easily be shared between two people. I also tried a couple of specialty cocktails.

Everything was good, but the zucchini was the star. The dish includes garlic, oregano, caper berries, whipped goat cheese, pickled red onion and micro greens. It was healthy, fancy and pretty — all the things a restaurant dish needs in the year 2026.

Hey there, it’s Heidi. I’ve been eating quite a bit of barbecue lately, and one of the best — and biggest — meals. I had all month was at The Smoke Pit in Mooresville.

I’ve long had a special place in my heart for smoked turkey, which isn’t always easy to pull off because the bird can dry out easily. But The Smoke Pit’s version was plenty moist — and it paired perfectly with the restaurant’s standout blueberry sauce, generally seen only on its blueberry smoked chicken salad.

Put that together with smoked pork, mac and cheese, potato salad and a decadent square of sweet cornbread, and I was in heaven.

(Side note: The restaurant’s Arboretum location even has a Queen’s Feast deal going right now that’s worth checking out. Thank me later.)

What’s up y’all? It’s Evan. I never need an excuse to eat wings, but I had one last month: I wrote about the last Midtown Sundries in existence, which happens to be in the place where I grew up.

I went back home to Denver to get some wings (and work on the story), but I was a little annoyed by the time I got there since it took more than an hour to drive there from LoSo. That traffic was no joke.

My negative mood didn’t last long, though. Wings are 30% off on Tuesdays at Midtown, so I got 10 teriyaki wings plus a side of steak fries for under $15. That deal would be good anywhere, but it’s especially generous at Midtown, since the wings are enormous.

Midtown isn’t for the flavor-averse. The teriyaki aroma from the wings was almost strong enough to taste, and the flavor smacks you in the face from the first bite. And there’s enough sauce on them to warrant multiple Wet Wipes.
