Waterfall Camping Close to CLT in Bessemer City was recently named one of Hipcamp’s 50 Favorite Places to Camp in America Right Now, making it one of just two North Carolina campsites to earn a spot on the list.
Located about three miles from the intersection of Interstate 85 and U.S. 321, the campsite features a large sandy camping area at the base of a waterfall, giving visitors the feel of a remote mountain escape just a short drive from Charlotte. The site can accommodate groups of up to 36 people and includes a grill, fire pit, swings, fishing and swimming when conditions are safe.
The campsite also serves as a convenient home base for exploring nearby outdoor attractions, including Crowders Mountain, Kings Mountain National Military Park and the U.S. National Whitewater Center.

Roughly 90 miles east of the Outer Banks, the campsite is a protected conservation easement along the Albemarle Sound that blends working farmland with diverse natural habitats, including hardwood forests, swamps, a vegetable garden and what is believed to be one of the largest fig orchards in the region.
Established to support environmental research, ecological education and public access to the shoreline, the property is also home to many wildlife species, including bald eagles, river otters, red foxes and more than 90 species of birds.
