Below normal temperatures are headed to the Charlotte area, with daily highs expected to nose dive from 90 degrees to around 60 by Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

As for the lows, sweater weather will officially arrive for Charlotte, with lows near 40 degrees this weekend, and a chance for patchy frost for out-lying areas, forecasters say.

“Near record high temperatures linger through Friday before a strong cold front crosses the region Friday night,” the NWS reported Wednesday.

“Behind the cold front, temperatures will drop below normal through the weekend. Low temperatures across the mountains will be cold enough for frost and could drop below freezing in some places early Sunday morning.”

The cold front will be accompanied by gusts exceeding 20 mph, the NWS says. No rain is expected.

Highs in the Charlotte area will be at 63 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, and 43 both nights, forecasters say.

In Boone, 100 miles northwest of uptown Charlotte, the high Saturday will only be 53 degrees and the low Sunday could be 32 degrees, officials say.

That means it’s officially time to bring in temperature-sensitive plants for the season. Official guidance calls for such plants to be taken indoors “when nighttime temperatures start to dip consistently to around 50 degrees,” according to yard and garden experts.

“Many indoor plants will see damage when temperatures drop to the mid-to-lower 40s° F, and nearly all will die if exposed to temperatures below freezing,” Iowa State University Extension and Outreach reports.

The cold front follows a period when temperatures have been 10 to 15 degrees above normal, the NWS says.
