Driver killed in ‘violent roadside struggle’ that injured trooper, NC officials say
A driver was fatally shot during a “violent roadside struggle” that also injured a state trooper, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, near Beulaville in Duplin County, about a 90-mile drive southeast from downtown Raleigh.
“A member of the State Highway Patrol attempted a traffic stop for a speeding violation in the area of N.C. 41 near Durwood Evans Rd. The driver failed to stop for emergency equipment and a short pursuit ensued,” the N.C. State Highway Patrol said in a Sept. 16 news release.
“The driver fled from his vehicle on foot and the member gave pursuit. After catching up with the driver, a violent roadside struggle occurred, and the member was assaulted prior to the firing of his service weapon which struck the suspect.”

Master Trooper Connor Davis performed life-saving measures on the driver until EMS personnel arrived, officials said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Davis, a seven-year veteran assigned to Duplin County, was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries suffered during the fight. Details of his condition have not been released.
The driver’s identity has also not been released.
“In accordance with agency protocol in any trooper-involved shooting, the involved member has been placed on administrative duty,” State Highway Patrol officials said. “The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting an independent investigation of the incident.”
