Construction starting on new Charlotte library branch. Here’s where it will go
Construction will begin soon on a new Charlotte Mecklenburg Library branch.
Mecklenburg County filed a “land disturbance permit,” which typically signals the start of construction, for a new Sugar Creek Library branch with the city of Charlotte in mid-August, public records show.

The permit lists 219 Eastway Drive in east Charlotte as the site of the new library, near the Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center. It will replace the existing Sugar Creek Library located on N. Tryon Street.
“Work is about to commence on the site,” library spokeswoman Ajonelle Poole confirmed. The project is likely to start with “pre-building work” such as creating a new parking lot, she added.

Poole told The Charlotte Observer she did not have a timeline for how long construction will take or when the new library will open. The project will cost $22 million, Axios Charlotte reported previously.
The new Sugar Creek branch isn’t the only new library sprouting up in Charlotte.
A new 38,000-square foot, two-story facility opened in University City in February 2025. And a new Main Library is under construction in uptown Charlotte. That branch is expected to open in spring 2027.
