Cold front will bring damaging winds, heavy rain to Charlotte area, forecasters say
Severe thunderstorms will hit the Charlotte region Tuesday in advance of a cold front that will cause temperatures to tumble, the National Weather Service says.

Lows in the 50s are expected multiple nights this week.
“The primary concerns from any stronger storms are damaging wind gusts and excessive rainfall,” forecasters say.
“As the front advances, this should provide enough of a trigger to pop off storms throughout the entire area. … Guidance shows timing starting over the mountains as early as 1 p.m. and quickly moving eastward through the 10 p.m. to midnight timeframe.”
The warning comes with a caveat: If the front advances faster than expected, “it cuts off the fuel for storms, hence ending thunderstorm chances.”
Either way, rain is expected across the region for days, and there could be isolated flash flooding between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesday, officials say.

Charlotte has an 80% chance of rain through the day Tuesday, with up to a quarter of an inch expected. After dark, chances rise to 90% and the totals could exceed a half an inch, forecasters say.
More rain (70% chance) and wind gusts of up to 25 mph are forecast for Wednesday, officials say.
When the volatile weather passes, the region will see much cooler temperatures, with highs around 70 degrees on Thursday and a low multiple nights of 53 degrees.
