Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged Floyd Morris Long with first-degree murder Saturday after finding the remains of Shaquina Latavia Harris, who was reported missing by her family on July 13. On Monday, he was denied bond.
Harris was last seen alive July 2, when she and Long visited Harris’ sister at an Atrium Hospital, an arrest affidavit said. She last spoke with her grandmother that day by phone just before midnight.
Harris and Long went back to Long’s home that day, the arrest affidavit said. Her phone never left Long’s home again after July 2, and last pinged at that location at 10 a.m. on July 5.
Long told police Harris left his home that day. He claimed when he got home at 5 p.m. all of her belongings, including her dog, a yorkie and terrier mix, were gone, the affidavit said.
But camera footage from neighboring homes showed Long and another man leaving the home at 4:52 p.m. with a dog that looked like Harris’, the affidavit said. Long, the other man and the dog got into a vehicle and drove away.
Police interviewed the unnamed other man who appeared in the camera footage with Long, the affidavit said.
While driving around on July 6, Long asked the man about favorite spots, including fishing spots. He stopped at a spot off Statesville Road to use the bathroom at 8:30 p.m. and “seemed extremely ‘fascinated’ with the area,” the affidavit said.
Long also told the other man he “did something bad,” and needed the man’s help to move something, the affidavit said.

When they got back to Long’s home, the man followed Long into his bedroom and saw a woman matching Harris description in bed after Long turned on a light, the affidavit said. The woman’s body was cold and blood was coming from her nose.
The man took the dog and left the home, the affidavit said. On July 16, the man and Long met up at a gas station and gave the dog back. It was the last time the man saw the dog, the affidavit said.
Detectives searched Long’s home and found blood in several areas, as well as a firearm. Blood was also found in the backseat of Long’s car. Harris’ dog has not been located.
A cadaver dog found Harris’ remains off the main road in a wooded area, as well as items matching her belongings, the affidavit said.
Long was also charged with larceny of a dog and concealing or failing to report a death, court records said.
Harris’ loved ones sat on the edge of benches in Mecklenburg County Superior Court on Monday as Long shuffled in before Judge Roy Wiggins. Someone in the crowd was heard whispering “yes” after Wiggins denied Long bond.
Outside the courtroom, one of Harris’ friends said she was there to make sure he didn’t get bond.
