American Airlines adding new European destination to Charlotte airport next summer
American Airlines is continuing to build Charlotte Douglas International Airport as a global gateway with new, direct service to Barcelona beginning next summer.

American will operate daily flights from Charlotte to Barcelona beginning on May 27, the airline recently announced. Tickets will be available for purchase starting Aug. 31 at AA.com or through American’s mobile app.
“As Charlotte’s hometown airline, we’re thrilled to continue connecting Charlotte to the world and Barcelona is an incredible addition to an already robust network at our second-largest hub,” said American Airlines Senior Vice President of CLT Operations Ralph Lopez Massas in a statement.
“Whether you’re starting your journey in the Carolinas or connecting through CLT, this new route creates even more opportunities to experience one of Europe’s most vibrant cities and strengthen international tourism.”
The Fort Worth, Texas-based airline is also expanding seasonal service to Paris next year beginning in March. With the announcement the airline’s European destinations from Charlotte increases to nine: Barcelona (BCN); Dublin (DUB); Frankfurt (FRA); London (LHR); Madrid (MAD); Munich (MUC); Paris (CDG); Rome (FCO) and Athens (ATH), which launched this summer.

Barcelona remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. The city known for its championship-winning soccer team reported a new first-quarter record this year with visitor numbers exceeding 3 million.
Charlotte Douglas remains American’s second-largest hub, with the airline serving around 90% of all flights. American provides flights to more than 170 destinations in 27 countries worldwide at CLT through its global network.
Charlotte Douglas is the seventh-busiest airport in the world, according to rankings released in April by Airports Council International. The airport recorded 574,193 aircraft operations last year — a 4% decline from 2024, and 7% increase compared to 2023.
CLT is currently in the midst of negotiating a new long-term lease with its airlines.
