A kitchen fire closed this classic Charlotte restaurant. Now, it’s coming back
Loaded breakfast burritos, original smashed pots and plate lunches have been sorely missed in South Charlotte and Pineville since a 2024 fire shut down Kopper Kettle.

Since then, generations of customers who’ve eaten at Kopper Kettle have awaited the return of the familiar restaurant they’ve shared meals at since 1971. And now, that time is near.
Sara Morris, daughter of founders George and Penny Karnezis, has been running the restaurant since 2014. She’s been working steadily to make repairs and reopen. She had even hoped to make it happen for Kopper Kettle’s 55th anniversary on May 12, but inspection delays held things up.
But, now, the restaurant has the all clear — and its set to welcome back fans and newcomers alike on Saturday, Oct. 3, Morris told CharlotteFive.
The restaurant won’t be quite the same without the presence of her beloved father, who died April 30 at age 88.

The interior will look a little different, too — the fire triggered the sprinklers to douse the dining room, leading to the replacement of the ceiling, floors and walls.
Yet many things will return, just as customers remember them.
Old photos and memorabilia are back up on the walls. Familiar staff members are returning.
The Kopper Kettle breakfast and lunch staples that have always drawn in customers are coming back. So is the sweet tea.
Who could forget the omelettes, pancakes, French toast and smashed potatoes loaded with cheese, onions, peppers and eggs or meat? There will also be hamburger steak, beef tips, pork chops and chicken and dumplings, too.
