The shooting happened around 11:20 a.m. Thursday near Greenville, after the driver collided with an N.C. Department of Adult Correction, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office said. The suspect initially threatened to harm himself, then turned on his passenger, officials said.
“Deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash in the 1200 block of Moore Rouse Rd, near Maury Correctional (Institution). … Upon arrival, deputies found a male and female in one vehicle with the male subject holding a weapon on the female, refusing to let her leave the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said in an Oct. 15 news release.
“Deputies attempted to get the male to drop the weapon and let the female go, however the male refused to cooperate.”
That’s when one deputy made “a safe shot,” fatally injuring the man and allowing the woman to escape, officials said.
“Neither the female nor the deputies were injured from the incident,” the sheriff’s office said.

The other vehicle in the crash was a Department of Adult Correction K9 unit, with an officer and a department dog inside.
“Our K-9 officer’s truck was forced off the road in a collision and rolled over multiple times,” according to Keith Acree communications director for the N.C. Department of Adult Correction.
“Prior to the crash, the suspect had dropped a woman off at Maury Correctional Institution to visit someone incarcerated there. The crash happened during that visit.”
Details of the officer’s condition have not been released. The dog became ill after the crash and was taken to a veterinarian for treatment. The dog is expected to recover, officials said.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. The suspect’s body has been taken to the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, the SBI said.
