Wegmans in Charlotte: What to know about traffic, tailgating ahead of the opening
As Wegmans prepares for its highly anticipated debut in south Charlotte next month, store officials are finalizing logistics for opening week — from managing traffic surges to accommodating shoppers looking to tailgate before it opens.

The Rochester, N.Y.-based grocery chain will open its 110,000-square-foot store at 9 a.m. Oct. 14 at 11550 N. Community House Road in Ballantyne.
The grocer boasts a sort of cult-like fanbase known as “Weggies” or “Wegmaniacs.” CJ Bolorin, merchandising area manager at Wegmans, said. He has previously opened stores in high-profile markets like Brooklyn and Manhattan, but said the reception in Charlotte stands out.
“When it comes to the Charlotte store, I’ve never had so many people just stop me and just say, ‘We’re so excited for Wegmans to be here,’ ” he said.
The reaction is backed by precedent. When Wegmans debuted its first North Carolina store in Raleigh in 2019, more than 3,000 customers lined up before the doors opened, drawing 30,000 shoppers on the first day, according to the company.
“We are anticipating a great turnout,” Bolorin said.
Wegmans also confirmed Monday plans for a second location in Cornelius as part of a broader strategy to establish three to five stores across the Charlotte area’s lucrative $10.8 billion competitive grocer market.
Ahead of the first Charlotte opening, Bolorin outlined key details on traffic coordination, store policies and what shoppers should expect when stepping inside the Ballantyne store.
Wegmans purchased the 14-acre Ballantyne property for $5.5 million in January 2025 and is investing $34.7 million into the facility.
Located less than a half-mile from The Bowl at Ballantyne off Interstate 485 (Exit 61), the store has 664 parking spaces. Wegmans arrived at that number by evaluating the land size to ensure sufficient room for shoppers, Bolorin said.
To manage expected traffic surge during opening week, Wegmans’ asset protection team is coordinating with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and city transportation officials.
Law enforcement will maintain a presence throughout opening week to direct traffic and ease congestion on surrounding roadways, Bolorin said.

Traffic management plans will be adjusted as needed and could extend past the first week if needed.
Groups like “Bring Wegmans to Charlotte” with nearly 9,000 members have been talking about tailgating and overnight camping for the opening. Bolorin confirmed that its fans will be permitted into the parking lot prior to opening to celebrate with a family-friendly atmosphere.
“We do expect a pretty fun and enthusiastic crowd,” Bolorin said. “We just want to make sure everyone’s having a good time.”
To support early arrivers and manage crowd, Wegmans plans to station extra staff on-site and will provide portable restrooms for those camping out overnight.
First-time Wegmans shoppers should keep several store policies and tips in mind for a smooth visit:
The store will open with both pick-up and delivery services, Wegmans spokeswoman Marci Rivera said.
Grocery delivery orders are handled by a third party, while pickup is done by Wegmans employees, who will be available at dedicated lanes in front of the store.
Hot meals through Meals2Go and catering services also will be available, Rivera said.
At this time, there are no plans to add a pharmacy.
The store is still hiring for part-time jobs and specialized full-time rolls, Bolorin said. In all, Wegmans will have 450 employees.
