Carvana is expanding Charlotte operations and adding 100 jobs to the region
Carvana, the car vending machine retailer known for its glass towers filled with vehicles, is planning to add 100 new jobs in the Charlotte region, the company announced this week.

The company is expanding its operations by bringing inspection, reconditioning and fulfillment work to its 50-acre wholesale auction facility in the Steele Creek area.
Carvana is integrating the retail inspection and reconditioning capabilities into its existing ADESA Charlotte wholesale auction facility, which features nearly 4,000 parking spaces. The site will now support both wholesale auction activities and direct-to-consumer retail vehicle reconditioning and fulfillment.
The Tempe, Arizona-based company plans to expand the ADESA site at 11600 Fruehauf Drive by adding entry-level and skilled jobs with benefits and no college degree requirement. Starting pay for hourly positions ranges from $17 to $33 per hour, according to Carvana. Some of the open jobs in Charlotte listed on Carvana’s website include positions for airbrushing, security, drivers, repairs and logistics.
Carvana acquired ADESA, a wholesale vehicle auction operator, in May 2022 for $2.2 billion.
An inspection and reconditioning center is a specialized automotive facility where used vehicles are inspected, repaired, cleaned and prepared for sale. In addition to expanding vehicle selection nationwide, this expansion will also help customers in North Carolina gain access to more inventory and quicker delivery options.
To maintain efficiency and consistency, operations are driven by CARLI, the proprietary software platform developed by Carvana.
Carvana employs nearly 1,000 people across North Carolina, with operations spread across several locations, including auction and reconditioning centers in Concord and Raleigh.
In 2019, Carvana selected Cabarrus County for a regional hub. It became the first industrial tenant at The Grounds at Concord, the site of a former Philip Morris cigarette manufacturing plant, according to the Cabarrus Economic Development Corp. The company invested more than $30 million to develop an inspection and reconditioning center at that location.

At the facility, used vehicles undergo inspections, repairs, detailing, and photography in high-definition, 360-degree camera booths before being listed online.
The project expanded Carvana’s presence in the Charlotte area and created hundreds of local technical jobs, including positions for vehicle inspection technicians, auto body specialists and fulfillment staff.
In North Carolina, the company operates three car vending machines, located in Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh. Charlotte’s eight-story car vending machine glass tower is at 3631 South Blvd.
Carvana debuted the glass tower in May 2018. Holding up to 32 cars, it was only the ninth vending machine built in the country and allowed customers to insert a giant commemorative coin to retrieve their purchased vehicle.
Charlotte was Carvana’s third market nationwide, serving as a key testing ground where the company introduced free, next-day home car delivery in September 2014, according to the company.
Founded in 2013, Carvana is an online auto retailer with more than 4 million customers. It allows users to complete purchases, financing and trade-ins online, with options for local pickup or delivery as soon as the same day.

Through its network of physical auction locations, online sales platforms, and support services, ADESA helps clients manage and trade vehicle inventory nationwide.
