Explosions will happen at 2 NC islands, including in the water, coastal city warns
The sights and sounds of war will erupt along the North Carolina coast, as part of U.S. Marine Corps combat exercises, the City of Havelock is warning citizens.

Marine Air Station Cherry Point intends to conduct “varied training operations” between Sept. 16 and Sept. 30, the base said in a Sept. 14 news release.
“From Sept. 16-17, amphibious training will take place in and around the Cherry Point waterways and into and out of … Piney Island in the Pamlico Sound. The training will include live-ammunition exercises,” the base says.
On Sept. 21, “investigations” of submerged military explosives will be conducted at Cat Island in the Bogue Sound, and “may include terrestrial and underwater” explosions, officials said.

“The public is advised to remain clear of the operational areas and follow all posted warnings and safety instructions,” the base said. “The neighboring community may hear occasional loud explosions at the air station.”
Piney Island Range, known as BT-11 (bombing target eleven), is a marshy peninsula in Pamlico Sound that covers around 10,000 acres, officials said. The island has no roads and is littered with “vehicle hulks, including old military aircraft” that were towed there to serve as targets, according to the Center for Land Use Interpretation.
Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point is about a 130-mile drive southeast from downtown Raleigh.
