Tacos and margs restaurant closes in Wesley Heights: ‘We leave feeling grateful’
Mexican restaurant Maiz Agua Sal is officially closed.
The tortilleria and agave bar on Jay Street served its last meals Sunday, Sept. 6, just two years after its Wesley Heights debut. The restaurant was run by husband-and-wife team Alyson and Dan Davis of ARDR Hospitality.

The group also operates Lincoln Street Kitchen & Cocktails, Craft Tasting Room and The Green Room in South End.
“There is a lot we will miss,” Alyson wrote in a farewell message shared on the restaurant’s social channels. “But mostly, we leave feeling grateful.”
“For the meals. The people. The neighborhood. The friendships. The celebrations. And every person who chose to pull up a chair at our table,” she said.
Details on what led to the closure weren’t made public. CharlotteFive reached out to the owners for more information on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and was awaiting a response.
Known as MAS for short, Maiz Agua Sal served scratch-made dishes rooted in Mexican flavors and tradition. When the restaurant opened, chef Jonathan Olvera led the kitchen, drawing inspiration from his family’s ties to the Michoacán region of western Mexico.

“It may be food that I have vivid memories about … it’s all, like, food that’s left an impact on me, that’s culturally important,” Olvera told CharlotteFive at the time.
The menu included seven kinds of tacos served on hand-pressed tortillas made with heirloom masa harina. There were also chicken flautas, enchiladas and mole along with brunch options like huevos rancheros and French toast.
Agua frescas were available by the glass or pitcher, plus horchata, Tamarinda and Jamaica — with the option to add tequila, CharlotteFive previously reported.
Margaritas, palomas and agave spirits were on the menu, too.
In her farewell, co-owner Alyson Davis thanked the community and the restaurant’s employees, many of whom she said will be transferred to ARDR’s other concepts.
“When we opened Maiz Agua Sal, we wanted to create a place centered around honest Mexican food and culture,” she wrote, in part. “A place where you could visit Mexico without jumping on a plane.”
