High school football update: West Charlotte, Marvin Ridge, Berry among Friday winners
Lots of Charlotte-area teams made big statements Friday night, and several continued surprising unbeaten seasons.

AL Brown improved to 3-0, as did Marvin Ridge. West Charlotte got a big win in South Carolina, and Hough got a momentous win in Cornelius.

Hough 30, Providence Day 3: The Huskies forced several turnovers and turned one sack into a fumble return for a score, scoring 30 unanswered points and handed the N.C. state champs their first loss in 16 games. Hough DB Davion Jones had two sacks and two picks. Tap here for complete coverage.
Marvin Ridge 42, Ardrey Kell 21: Marvin Ridge improved to 3-0 and continued to score bunches of points. In three weeks, the Mavericks have outscored opponents 162-34.
On Friday, the Mavericks beat their cross-country rivals and knocked Ardrey Kell from the ranks of the unbeaten.
“This means the world to me and my team,” QB Levi Kerr said. “We had a great game plan. We executed. We put it all together.”
AL Brown 28, Mooresville 27: AL Brown won its first two games by a combined score of 86-10 but stepped up in competition with a Mooresville team that’s been a regional power the past few years. Brown scored 14 points to rally in the fourth quarter and send Mooresville off to an 0-3 start. Brown is now 3-0. Down 21-14 heading into the fourth. Chanse Bost tied the game with a 2-yard rushing TD. Mooresville QB Weston Michalak then threw a 55-yard pass to Tyler Moore for a 6-point lead before Bost threw a 37-yard pass to Kaden Caldwell for the tying score. Brown’s kicker, Morgan Burgess, won it with his extra point.
West Charlotte 20, Summerville (SC) 19: West Charlotte got a monster win, taking down the No. 4 5A team in South Carolina on the road. SC’s largest class is 5A. The Lions (2-1) won their second straight game after losing their season-opener, 24-0, at NC 7A state champ Greensboro Grimsley. On Friday, the Lions jumped out to a 14-7 first quarter lead and a 20-10 halftime lead. Summerville closed to 20-19 in the third quarter but couldn’t score again.
Buford (GA) 41, Mallard Creek 7: Mallard Creek lost in a torrent of turnovers against the nation’s No. 2 team. Mallard Creek (2-1) beat 3-time Virginia state champion Maury on the road last week, but struggled against one of Georgia’s best this week. The Mavericks got down 10-0 after one quarter and 34-7 after two. Buford scored three defensive touchdowns off Mavericks’ turnovers.
Berry 35, Rocky River 7: Berry improved to 2-1 for the season, getting above .500. That’s been rare in recent years. Rocky River fell to 0-3. Berry jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and cruised.

At the beginning of the season, second-year Chambers coach Captain Munnerlyn said he felt his team could win everything — a conference championship, a regional championship and a state title, too.
And so far this season, Munnerlyn’s team is doing a pretty good job of backing up his talk.
Chambers routed Corvian Community Charter, 54-14, at home Thursday night to improve to 3-0.
Corvian (2-1) is a 2A power. The Cardinals are 26-4 over the past three years, with a state championship appearance and a couple of wins over NC 8A teams in that run and a 19-0 shutout of 7A Independence last week. But while Independence is rebuilding after losing its quarterback to Weddington and its former head coach to West Charlotte, Chambers is stocked with talent, size and speed.
This year’s 3-0 start matches what the Cougars did a year ago, and now Chambers will try for its first 4-0 start since a state championship season five years ago.

But after winning by a combined score of 152-43 over Gray’s Collegiate, Hopewell and Corvian, the Cougars will take a step up in competition next week, playing next Thursday at unbeaten Palisades in what is looking like the Charlotte-area game of the week.
In its third game, Chambers was simply too big for Corvian, particularly on the line of scrimmage when the Cardinals had the ball. Chambers’ pass rushers were often coming after Corvian sophomore QB Tyson Douglas-Brown without much interference.
Before Chambers put in reserves with five minutes to play, Corvian accounted for negative 44 yards rushing and 53 yards passing. Its quarterbacks were sacked five times.
But Chambers also hurt itself, plenty with penalties, ending the game with 13 penalties for 138 yards total.
Corvian scored twice because of some of those Chambers mistakes and got to a 14-7 second-quarter deficit. A third down and long interference penalty set up a 25-yard scoring pass from Douglas-Brown to electric receiver Cam Simpson. Then, after Corvian missed the extra point, a roughing the kicker penalty on Chambers gave Corvian another shot. This time, James Canusa made the kick.
Later, down 21-7 late in the first half, Corvian sacked Chambers QB Jamouri Nichols and Cardinals defensive lineman Jesiah Fields — who recovered and advanced an offensive fumble early in the game — scooped it up and ran 24 yards for a score. That trimmed the lead to 21-14.
Up next? Kam Guy ran the ensuing kick back for a touchdown, but another penalty pushed Chambers back to the Corvian 40. The Cougars quickly moved down to score, on a Keland Shelton 1-yard run and took a 27-14 lead into halftime. But it felt like a two-score game could’ve been a five-score one.
And to get to where Munnerlyn wants his team to go, Chambers will have sharpen things up.
— In the second half, Chambers’ issues with penalties continued. After a 12-yard scoring pass from Jamouri Nichols to Malachi Gant put Chambers up 33-14, the Cougars lined up for a two-point conversion. A 5-yard penalty made the attempt longer, and an incomplete pass ensued. Later, a fourth-down run for a first down in the third quarter by Nichols that would’ve put Chambers at the Corvian 12 was called back, too.
— When it gets to conference play and state playoff competition, Corvian will be a real threat for the 2A championship. The Cardinals have plenty of really quick and shift athletes and the size differential will also even out.
— Chambers’ band was in mid-season form and the Cougars’ crowds are starting to swell as they did when the team reached three straight finals from 2019-21, winning two.
Jamouri Nichols, Chambers: The Cougars quarterback was named offensive player of the year in the Meck Power 6 conference a year ago. He looks like a candidate to repeat this season. He was polished in the pocket for the most part. He just missed three long touchdown passes, two while scrambling, and had another one dropped, but he was dangerous with his arm and his feet. Despite four drops, Nichols finished 10 of 20 passing for 173 yards and four touchdowns. He ran 10 times for 107 yards.
Malachi Gant, Chambers: Gant caught three touchdown passes and showed a consistent ability to get behind the defense.
Kelvin Stinson, Cam Simpson, Corvian: Both players made some nice plays on kickoff returns, combining for more than 140 yards in returns, not including a 50-yarder called back for a penalty. Simpson also caught a 25-yard scoring pass.
