Davion Jones, defense lead No. 1 Hough past No. 2 Providence Day in showdown

Two plays really were all the difference in one of the most highly anticipated high school football games in Mecklenburg County history Friday night — and they both had the fingerprints of South Carolina commit Davion Jones all over them.

After getting an interception on Providence Day’s first possession, Jones kept making big plays in Hough’s decisive 30-3 win at home.

And two of them were quite memorable.

— With Hough up 7-3, Jones intercepted Providence Day’s Cole Cater for the second time in the first half. Jones returned the interception to the Providence Day 9. One play later, Jamarion Morrison ran in for a two-score lead.

— On Providence Day’s next offensive play, Jones, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound senior, came flying off the left side on a blitz called by Hough defensive coordinator Chachi Sullivan. Jones got to Cater quickly and seemed to surprise him. Cater was hit and lost the ball. Hough’s 6-1, 260-pound defensive tackle, senior Caleb Dorsett, picked it up and returned it 17 yards for a shocking 21-3 lead.

And with a defense like Hough’s, which has more than 20 sacks in three weeks, 18 points can seem like 50.

The game featured 36 Division I recruits and 18 Division I commits, more than any game in Mecklenburg County history, and Jones’ performance counted as probably the best of all, on a night where Hough’s defense, which had seven sacks, shut down one of the best offenses in the nation. In a decisive first half, when Hough took a 24-3 lead, the Huskies allowed 76 yards passing and 2 yards rushing.

Hough’s defense also knocked Cater out of the game late in the second quarter with an apparent hand injury, forcing Providence Day coach Chad Grier to bring in junior Gavin Bronikowski to run the team for about 2 1/3 quarters.

And without its QB 1, Providence Day’s hopes were pretty much done.

Hough improved to 3-0, winning its 17th straight game. Providence Day had a 16-game win streak snapped and fell to 2-1.

Davion Jones, Hough: Jones had two interceptions, two sacks and a forced fumble that led to a touchdown. Jones, who also had a QB pressure and tipped pass in the third quarter, was the best player on a field full of Saturday and possibly Sunday talent on Friday night.

Jamarion Morrison, Hough: The 5-9, 206-pound senior running back got a lot of tough yards for the Huskies, a few key first downs and a touchdown. Morrison had 63 yards rushing on 14 carries. QB Ethan Royal was also solid (9 of 22, 99 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT; 54 yards rushing, TD).

Gavin Bronikowki, Providence Day: Forced into duty late in the second quarter, Bronikowki held up fairly well against a ferocious Hough defense that knew he had to pass. The junior QB has a future. Cater was 6 of 14 for 74 yards. Bronikowski was 7 of 16 for 72.

— The teams have a two-year deal and will play next season at Providence Day. Given the high-profile nature of the teams, and how quickly this year’s game sold out, this matchup would be a prime candidate for the Panthers’ Keep Pounding Classic at Bank of America Stadium. It would be Hough’s third straight year in the game, however.

— Providence Day never really tried to establish a run game, with just one planned run well into the second quarter. Hough committed to running the ball early and often.

— Providence Day’s defense, probably the best in the state behind Hough’s, played well, but was defending short fields all game. The Chargers had a goal-line stand in the first half and allowed 213 yards before the reserves came in.

— Both teams came into Friday’s showdown nationally ranked. Hough was as high as No. 18 nationally. Providence Day was as high as No. 29.

— The game was sold out early in the week and fans were up to 5-6 people deep on the sidelines and behind the end zone.

— Hough’s 6-8, 330-pound senior offensive lineman, Treveon Pegues, left the game in the second quarter and removed his jersey. He has committed to N.C. A&T.

Hough sophomore receiver Mason Pearsall Brown, who had a third-quarter touchdown to put Hough up 30-3, is going to be special, special.
