West Charlotte River District adds a $20-million necessity to the neighborhood
The River District in West Charlotte is continuing to expand as the city’s newest neighborhood. Medical offices are next for the $6 billion, 1,400-acre mixed-use redevelopment district.

A 35,000-square-foot outpatient healthcare campus is coming to the district, built by Charlotte developer Taylor Capital, according to Crescent Communities, the district’s master developer.
The campus will be on about four acres, and it’ll be the first dedicated medical office space in the district. The plan includes several standalone offices for physicians, specialty medical groups, and health systems, tink Crescent said Thursday.
The campus will also be near the River District’s town center, which already has development plans that include a farm, retail and housing.
Taylor Capital is expected to close on the site next year and construction will begin in January 2028. The developer will be investing about $20 million in the project.
The River District is on the west side of the airport and Interstate 485 near the Catawba River. Development plans began in 2016 and since then it’s added houses, retail centers, people and a wooden troll.
The medical offices are just the latest piece of infrastructure being added to the River District.
A kindergarten through eighth grade school is being added to the district in partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. It’ll be walking distance from a majority of the homes in the River District.

May was a busy month for the district.
About 158 single-family attached units are being built on 31 acres at 8000 Dixie River Road, according to a land development construction plan permit filed with the city in mid-May. The units are part of Crescent Communities’ line of townhome rentals, Harmon.
NOVEL River District, the 318-unit, seven-building multifamily development, held its grand opening in May. And in the same month, a segment of the three-mile Forge Village Trail Loop, a new walking and bicycle trail connecting Westrow and Basswood, also opened.
Charlotte City Council approved over $17.6 million in design and construction cost for the district’s new fire station, Firehouse 44, also in May. The firehouse will be built near a temporary station currently in use at 7800 Dixie River Road.
In February, Crescent announced a 28,200-square-foot, two-story mixed-use building, which will house the district’s first retailers.
Besides people and retail, in November, the River District welcomed Big Pete with the Big Feet, the 65-foot-tall wooden troll that’s part of Thomas Dambo’s “Trail of a Thousand Trolls” project.
The River District ultimately will bring around 5,000 homes, market rate and affordable apartments, millions of square feet of office space, half a million square feet of retail and 1,000 hotel rooms.
