A storied former regional power joins The Observer’s Sweet 16 football poll
There is one new team in The Observer’s Sweet 16 high school football poll this week, but it’s one that longtime area fans will be quite familiar with.

The Sweet 16, which began in 1984, ranks the best teams in the media company’s coverage zone, which currently includes state association-affiliated schools in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union counties.
The winner at the end of the season will receive a large banner to hang in its gymnasium.

New to the poll this week is past N.C. power A.L. Brown of Kannapolis.
The Wonders are two-time state champions and one of the region’s most storied franchises.
From 2021-24, the Wonders didn’t win more than six games in a season. That was a bit unusual. Under coach Justin Hardin, one of the school’s most popular past players, AL Brown went 8-4 last season. And after Friday’s 44-6 win over Concord, the Wonders are 2-0 this season, playing some of their best football in years.

In two games, AL Brown has outscored opponents 86-16.
