Target Beauty Studio will feature beauty advisors, more than 1,600 products, including 90 emerging and global brands, the Minneapolis-based retail giant said.

Target announced the plan Wednedsay after its five-year partnership with Ulta Beauty ended this month. Both companies mutually decided a year ago not to renew the agreement.

The beauty studio will open Sept. 10 at 600 stores nationwide and online, including five locations in Charlotte, according to Target. The openings will be followed up with in-store celebrations Sept. 26.

The new studio is an example of how the Target is investing in store experiences as part of the company’s growth strategy.

Target has seen sales slump recently blamed on inflation, backlash over diversity, equity and inclusion policy changes and product controversies. Target is seeing a turnaround, reporting second-quarter net sales of $26.5 billion, up 5.3% year-over-year.

Target Beauty Studio customers can expect to see a collection of products and brands that will include skincare, makeup, haircare, fragrance, bath and body, and nails.

“When guests shop for beauty, they want to pick up their standbys while also exploring what’s new and trending, and Target Beauty Studio is designed with that mix in mind,” Amanda Nusz, senior vice president of merchandising, essentials and beauty for Target, said in a statement.

Brands customers will find products ranging from Glamazon Beauty by celebrity makeup artist Kim Baker and Buff Beauty by founder Katia Beauchamp to Peta Jane Beauty founded by Peta Murgatroyd and SARELLY co-founded by Anna Sarelly and Rémi Martini.

SARELLY, based in Mexico City, calls the Target’s new addition “a major moment for Mexican beauty.”

A center table will anchor the space inside Target, showcasing new brands with samples, starting with Lake & Skye’s premium fragrances. “Beauty advisors” will offer customers personalized service and recommendations.

Target did not respond to a request for comment regarding how much the company is investing in the studios and how many employees will be hired.

In 2021, Target and Ulta, the nation’s largest beauty retailer, partnered with a shop-in-shop concept following COVID lockdowns. But after five years, the companies agreed to end the arrangement as Ulta focuses on its stand-alone stores and online business instead. Target Beauty Studio will help fill that void.

Target is competing for shoppers in other ways, too.

In May, the company announced a multimillion dollar store remodeling plan nationwide, including three in the Charlotte area. It is also opening stores in the region. An Indian Land, SC, location opened last year and another Target store is planned off Old York Road in Rock Hill.

Target has more than 2,000 stores nationwide, with 17 in the Charlotte market. The company has over 400,000 employees.
