SouthPark sushi spot to welcome guests back after major revamp. ‘Beyond excited’

After months of renovations, YAMA SouthPark is poised to open its doors — again.

The casual Asian fusion restaurant kicks off its soft opening phase on Tuesday, Sep. 1, with dinner-only service from 5 p.m.-9 p.m., owner Birdie Yang shared on social media.

“Thank you so much for patiently waiting while we transformed our space,” he wrote. “We are beyond excited to finally welcome everyone back and can’t wait for you to see the new YAMA SouthPark.”

Walk-ins are welcome as the eatery works to get its reservation system up and running, Yang added.

Formerly YAMA Asian Fusion, the Japanese restaurant specialized in high-quality sushi and sashimi alongside hibachi entrées and more.

Its sister concepts — YAMA Loso and YAMA Waverly — have similar offerings. Think: edamame appetizers, maki rolls, kushiyaki and udon noodle bowls.

The debut of YAMA SouthPark comes months after a temporary closure in April.

“We’re renovating, refreshing, and re-imagining everything” at the space at 720 Governor Morrison St., Yang said at the time. The restaurant was initially slated to reopen in May.

Yang is also behind SORA, a high-end tasting menu concept in Myers Park, and the now-closed Baku. The latter shuttered in April to make way for a new development, ending its 13-year run in SouthPark, CharlotteFive previously reported.

Specifics on YAMA SouthPark’s menu and what locals can expect are under wraps. CharlotteFive reached out to Yang for more information on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and was awaiting a response.
