Charlotte Catholic shuts out South Mecklenburg in season opener

Charlotte Catholic went back to the future Friday.

The Cougars beat South Mecklenburg 24-0 in the return of coach Mike Brodowicz, who led the Cougars to five state titles from 2014-22.

Brodowicz came back, bringing a lot of excitement to a fan base that is hopeful for a return to the Cougars being a state title threat.

Friday, Catholic, a 6A team ranked No. 13 in The Observer’s Sweet 16, handled a South Mecklenburg team that made an 8A playoff appearance last season and is a serious contender for another postseason run.

After a scoreless first quarter, Catholic scored 14 points in the first quarter and added another touchdown in the third, working out to a comfortable margin.
