YMCA donors should reconsider until these Morrison questions are answered | Opinion

The Morrison YMCA sale is not simply a neighborhood dispute. It is a governance crisis that should cause every donor to the Charlotte YMCA network to reconsider their philanthropy.

The YMCA Board of Directors has approved the $42.5 million sale of Morrison without releasing the documents members and donors need to evaluate whether fiduciary, governance, and professional and business standards of care were met. We have not seen the appraisals. We have not seen the alternatives analysis. We have not seen the conflict‑of‑interest disclosures. We have not seen the allocation of proceeds. We have not seen the board minutes. We have not seen the titles and deeds to the impacted properties.

Without these records, the public cannot determine whether this was a prudent, transparent, and mission‑consistent decision — or simply a liquidation of a community asset built through decades of memberships, donations, and volunteerism.

Major donors, in particular, should not only reconsider their giving, but also contact North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson to request that his office pause this transaction until there is full transparency of the applicable records. The Attorney General has both the authority and the responsibility to ensure that charitable assets are not transferred without proper disclosure and review.

Until the YMCA demonstrates accountability, donors should withhold support, and regulators should intervene to ensure that fiduciary and stewardship standards are honored.

Perfect reflection of Trump: Mall Reflecting Pool. Take something beautiful. Decide to spend lots of money to make it gaudy. Hire with a no-bid contract. Cost overruns. Not finished on time. Liner falls apart. Put up ugly fence to desecrate the National Mall. Blame vandals with no evidence. Arrest someone for the damage. Find out work was improperly done. Drop the charges. Still not finished and ugly fence still there. Never apologize.

The Democratic Party seems to be confused as to what it stands for. Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seem to be all in for socialism. Joe Manchin and James Carville are trying to tell party leaders this is the wrong platform for America. Very few, if any, blue state senators have said this leftist movement is wrong by saying we have a big tent for everybody’s beliefs and ideology. Let’s keep the midterms simple. Socialism has failed everywhere it’s been tried, so why does any portion of a political party try and take America down this road?

Since Republicans took the Congress and the White House in January 2025, there have been consistent failures in fulfilling their constitutional duties. The Senate confirmed the most unqualified cabinet secretaries in modern history. For example, Kash Patel has no federal or local law enforcement experience, training or even education but was confirmed to serve as the FBI Director. Could you image being an FBI agent struggling to complete FBI training only to have a director confirmed with not even a quarter of your training?

In addition, Linda McMahon has no education experience but was confirmed to serve as the Education Secretary. The US is engaged in a war with a foreign nation, and the Congress failed to fulfill its constitutional charge to declare and authorize wars.

Dr. Anthony Fauci is being harassed by the Trump administration because of his recommendations during the Covid era. Granted, he made some decisions that in retrospect turned out to be needlessly restrictive, but this was a new disease! Restrictions that some viewed as too harsh were appropriate; others not. Fauci had a long, distinguished career and doesn’t deserve being hassled by Republicans whose idea of scientific progress is discouraging vaccinating infants and children.
