The N.C. Department of Transportation says the repairs are needed for the Caldwell Street bridge over I-277 after crews discovered damage to a beam. According to the state, the damage indicated a recent hit.

The repairs include: Heat straightening a section of the damaged bridge beam, removing a damaged section of the beam at mid-span and welding a new section into place.

State crews will conduct lane closures beginning on Thursday, when I-277 Inner and Caldwell Street will be closed to replace a section of the bridge’s mid-span beam.

Temporary support beams will be installed prior to removing the damaged section of the beam, according to NCDOT. The temporary support beams will occupy travel lanes on I-277, making the full closure necessary.

State crews also conducted double lane closures on I-277 underneath the Caldwell Street Bridge between July 30 and Aug. 3 for repairs.

Closures are expected to be in place continuously through 5 a.m. on Aug. 10. During this time, drivers will be detoured off I-277 Inner at Exit 3A to 11th Street, before continuing back to I-277 Inner.
