Two killed, two injured when gunfire erupts outside bar at 1:30 am, NC police say

Gunfire outside a self-proclaimed “dive bar” killed two people and wounded two others before dawn Sunday, according to police in North Carolina.

Among the injured is a woman who was shot in the back, officials say.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at The 601 Bar in Dunn, and investigators have yet to release details of a suspect or motive.

“Officers responded to reports of multiple gunshot victims at the establishment. Upon arrival, officers located several individuals who had sustained gunshot wounds,” police said in an Aug. 2 news release.

“Preliminary information indicates the shooting stemmed from an argument outside the bar.”

Jarvis Elliott of Erwin and Travis Williams of Dunn died at the scene, police said.

The wounded include a woman from Coats who suffered a gunshot wound to the back, and a man from Dunn who was grazed by a bullet, police said. Their identities have not been released.

N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement reports it is assisting Dunn police in the investigation.

The 601 Bar, formerly known as The Corner Bar, changed ownership in February, according to Facebook post.

“We are fully cooperating with local authorities and law enforcement,” the bar’s management said in a social media post.

“​We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by the tragic incident that occurred outside in the parking lot area at The 601 Bar after closing. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies go out to the victims, their families, and all those impacted by this devastating situation.”

Dunn is about a 40-mile drive south from downtown Raleigh.
