South End’s Yunta Nikkei ranked No. 38 on Yelp’s latest list of the country’s best Japanese restaurants.

“Yunta Nikkei highlights the vibrant fusion of Japanese and Peruvian flavors, offering dishes that mix raw bar favorites, ceviches, and Japanese comfort food,” Yelp wrote. “Must-try items include tiraditos with yuzu kosho, miso-marinated fish, and inventive sushi rolls spiced up with Peruvian aji amarillo.”

The recognition follows another recent honor for the restaurant. Earlier this year, Yunta Nikkei placed No. 80 on Yelp’s Top 100 U.S. Restaurants list, CharlotteFive reported.

Yunta specializes in Nikkei cuisine, a culinary tradition that blends Japanese techniques with Peruvian ingredients and flavors. The menu includes a variety of ceviches alongside noodle dishes, stir-fries and grilled meat skewers.

Guests looking to end the meal on a sweet note can order the chocolate lucuma dessert, which pairs rich dark chocolate with lucuma, a tropical fruit native to the Andean valleys of South America.

The drink menu features a range of beer and wine selections, but cocktails take center stage. Many are built around pisco, Peru’s signature grape spirit, including the classic pisco sour. Other cocktail options include the chilcano, made with pisco, Fever Tree ginger ale and fresh lime, and the pisco punch, served with pisco, lemon, lime, passion fruit and Prosecco.
